Whoever said that women are the weaker sex? By: Chris Hewer

Whoever said that women are the weaker sex? By: Chris Hewer

When Husayn went into the desert to avoid bloodshed and escape the tyrant, the women shared every minute of the hardship – plus they had to comfort the children who went with them.

There is a terrible nonsense told in the world today. Some people say that women are the weaker sex! Some say that women have an inferior place in the Islamic way of life! Consider these facts. Muhammad was recruited as a manager by a rich merchant’s widow, who proposed marriage to him and whose money kept the family. Their daughter, Fatima, was the one who passed on knowledge of how he lived the message of Islam and his descendants came through her. When Husayn went into the desert to avoid bloodshed and escape the tyrant, the women shared every minute of the hardship – plus they had to comfort the children who went with them. When the water ran out and their milk dried up, they had to bear the anguish of crying babies that they could not feed. As the massacre drew closer, imagine their fear of what would happen to them and their children! They dressed their menfolk for battle and sent husbands, sons and brothers to be brutally slain. They witnessed their deaths and received back broken bodies. They saw two of Husayn’s sons killed; one a six-months-old baby. After the battle, they were taken prisoner and humiliated by their captors. In spite of all this, it was Husayn’s sister, Zaynab, who spoke out to rebuke the tyrant and through her we know the details of the story. Does all that sound like role models for ‘the weaker sex’? Think now of the women in refugee camps around the world; millions of them. Does not the future of humanity lie at the feet of mothers – and Paradise too?
